Colour Woodcuts

eduction colour woodcuts, or 'ghost prints' as Anna calls them, are cut from one block. First the 'white' is cut away, and then the lightest colour is printed over the whole. Then the areas intended to stay that colour are removed, and the process repeated for  subsequent colours.  This is a very dynamic way of making a colour print, as every cut and colour choice is fixed throughout the process.  There is no going back, as the block is destroyed en route, hence it is also known as 'the suicide method'.

hite-line woodcuts are designed with a 'white line' cut to separate each different area of colour.  These areas are then hand coloured on the block, before printing, a few areas at a time.  It is a very time-consuming process, as each print will be have several passes through the press.  The prints are all unique, and I think the 'white-line' can give beautiful results.  Patience is key with this way of working!
